A FINAL THOUGHT:
We are always on a journey of becoming
In 1959, renowned Psychologist Carl Rogers wrote about the ‘actualising tendency’ that exists within every one of us. He defined this in the way we seek to develop “capacities in ways which serve to maintain or enhance” ourselves. He argued this goes beyond what “Maslow terms ‘deficiency needs’ for air, food, water, and the like, but also more generalized activities.”
Specifically, he said, “It involves development toward functions, expansion in terms of growth, expansion of effectiveness through the use of tools… It is development toward autonomy and away from heteronomy, or control by external forces.” Who we are becoming, be it individually or collectively, is constantly in motion. A quest for living at our best with infinite possibilities.
